Marble Temple (Wat Benchamabophit Dusitvanaram) in Bangkok (Thailand)

Here is a postcard of the Marble Temple (Wat Benchamabophit Dusitvanaram) in Bangkok, from Marie Nosten of Thailand. She’s half French, half Karen.

The Wat Benchamabophit Dusitvanaram is a Buddhist temple (wat) in the Dusit district of Bangkok, Thailand. Construction of the temple began in 1899 at the request of King Chulalongkorn after building his palace nearby. The temple's name literally means the Temple of the fifth King located near Dusit Palace. The main Buddha image (Phra Buddhajinaraja) is a copy of Phra Buddha Chinarat that resides in Wat Mahathat, Phitsanulok in northern Thailand. The ashes of King Chulalongkorn are buried beneath the statue.

It is called marble temple for the gleaming white Carrara marble (from Italy) of which it is constructed. It is said to be the most modern and one of the most beautiful of Bangkok's royal wats, Wat Benchamabophit is also notable for its use of European designs. The cloister around the assembly hall houses 52 images of Buddha showing different mudras.

In 2005, the temple was submitted to UNESCO for consideration as a future World Heritage Site.

Here is the stamp that she used:
