A postcard of the Trinity Suburbs and the Island of Tears from Natalja of Belarus.
This card features the Trinity Suburbs and the Island of Tears. The Trinity Suburbs is the oldest surviving district of Minsk, the Capital and largest city of Belarus. The neighborhood lies at the left bank of the Svislach River in the Southeastern part of Minsk. The area takes its name from the Trinity Convent (1630, Greek Catholic), little of which remains today. A small footbridge leads from the suburbs to the Island of Tears, a memorial set up in 1988 to commemorate Belarusian soldiers who died in the USSR's disastrous, 9-year war in Afghanistan (1979-1988). The centrepiece of the memorial is the chapel, with haunting figures of grieving mothers, sisters and widows at its base. A nearby fountain features the boy-like figure of an angel, rigged up to cry teardrops.
