Erfurt Cathedral and St. Severus Church in Erfurt (Germany)

A postcard of the Mariendom (Cathedral of Mary) and the Severikirche
(St. Severus Church) from Michael of Germany.

Erfurt is the capital city of Thuringia and the main city nearest to the geographical centre of Germany. Erfurt's landmark is the unique ensemble of both the Mariendom (Cathedral of Mary) and the Severikirche (St. Severus Church) that majestically dominates the cityscape. This architectural masterpiece of German gothic style is an imposing example of the art of church architecture.

The Catholic Erfurt Cathedral is a 1200 year old church located on Cathedral Hill of Erfurt, in Thuringia, Germany. It is of a International Gothic style, and is also known as St Mary's Cathedral, and is located, uniquely, on a hillside. Martin Luther was ordained in the cathedral in 1507. The central spire of the three towers that sit aloft the cathedral harbours the Maria Gloriosa which, at the time of its casting by Geert van Wou in 1497, was the world's largest free-swinging bell.

In 836, the relics of St. Severus of Ravenna were brought by the Archbishop of Mainz to Germany, first to Mainz and later to Erfurt. The relics were housed in a monastery that stood on the site of the present Severikirche. The sarcophagus that holds the relics of St. Severus was installed around 1365.

The two churches are joined by a 70-step monument staircase.
