Blue Mosque in Istanbul (Turkey)

Altough from Great Britain, Charisia was in Turkey when she sent me her postcard featuring the Blue Mosque.

The Sultan Ahmed Mosque, popularly known as the Blue Mosque for the blue tiles adorning the walls of its interior, is a mosque in Istanbul, the largest city in Turkey and the capital of the Ottoman Empire (1453- 1923). It was built between 1609 and 1616, during the rule of Sultan Ahmed I. Like many other mosques, it also comprises a tomb of the founder, a madrasah and a hospice. Four minarets stand at the corners of the mosque. Each of these fluted, pencil-shaped minarets has three balconies (į¹£erefe), while the two others at the end of the forecourt only have two balconies.
